DOC Meeting - April 30, 2026

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the WDDOA Directors of Coaching meeting on Thursday, April 30th. We appreciate your time, engagement, and thoughtful questions as we continue to navigate a period of meaningful transition across youth soccer. Below is a summary of the key takeaways and confirmed information shared during the meeting to help you plan confidently for the 2026–27 seasonal year.

1. Federation Update: National 1 – Confirmed Clarity

The Federation has officially introduced National 1 as a unified, top‑level team‑based competition platform launching in 2026–27, bringing together components of US Club (NPL) and US Youth Soccer (National League / Frontier Conference).

Key confirmed points:

  • National 1 is being introduced in phases. For 2026–27, the focus is on the highest team‑based competition directly beneath ECNL Regional League.
  • All operators are approved on a ONE-YEAR designation.
  • For District 3 (South Texas excluding El Paso), STXCL has been named an approved National 1 operator for the upcoming season.
  • National 1 is not replacing local leagues. Official Federation and US Youth Soccer communications confirm that local leagues remain a critical part of the pathway.
  • There is no requirement for clubs to:
    • Move all teams into a single league
    • Leave WDDOA or any other sanctioned competition
    • Enter multiple teams to “secure” future placement
  • Multiple pathways into National 1 are intentional and protected, regardless of affiliation.
  • Teams that should apply directly to National 1 are Frontier Conference and NPL teams. All other teams follow published qualification pathways.

Importantly, early movement does not create an advantage while National 1 continues to stabilize.

2. WDDOA’s Role: Stability and Merit‑Based Progression

WDDOA is not going away.

We will continue to operate as an independent, DOC‑run league aligned with Federation principles and focused on:

  • Merit‑based advancement
  • Right team, right level placement
  • Geographic sensibility
  • Competitive integrity
  • Club choice

WDDOA remains the largest team‑based league operator beneath National 1 in the western part of the state, and our structure already aligns with the newly published National 1 Rules.

3. Introduction of Platinum Brackets – Launching Fall 2026

STYSA and WDDOA will introduce Platinum Brackets in both East and West beginning Fall 2026.

Platinum Brackets will:

  • Represent the highest level of competition within WDDOA and STYSA
  • Be offered U11 through U19, boys and girls
  • Feature continued promotion and relegation
  • Include cross‑district competition opportunities
  • Align directly with National 1 in 27/28 as that structure settles

Structure overview:

  • U11–U12: Platinum will promote/relegate directly with Prime
  • U13 and above: Platinum will sit directly beneath National 1, with movement both up and down based on results

This provides a clear, ready‑to‑go competitive target without forcing premature change.

4. Operational Updates for 2026–27

Age Group Alignment

  • WDDOA is transitioning back to school‑year age groups
  • This change is expected to be far less disruptive than the previous shift
  • Teams must retain at least 50% of their core to accept their pre-qualified spot as published on the PQ List
  • Teams must retain at least 25% of their core to remain in their existing 25/26 age group and flight
  • Flexibility and individual registrar support will be available
  • Additional guidance and tools will be published shortly

Geographic Bracketing & Travel Improvements

Based on a completed geographic analysis, WDDOA is exploring expanded geographic bracketing in:

  • Alpha through U16
  • Select Challenger age groups

Confirmed and in progress:

  • Creation of a South Zone bracket including Victoria, Corpus, and Valley teams
  • Victoria will move out of Austin‑based brackets beginning Fall 2026, significantly reducing Austin‑to‑Victoria travel
  • Collaboration with San Antonio clubs and leadership to organize San Antonio‑specific brackets where participation supports it

If participation levels allow, these alignments may also support end‑of‑season playoffs for promotion.

These adjustments are designed to immediately benefit families through:

  • Reduced travel
  • Lower costs
  • Clearer competitive placement
  • More meaningful matches
